The valve buyer's glossary

This glossary defines the terms used across Optimus Distributor's site — valve types from ball to butterfly, pressure and rating language, hydronic balancing and PICV vocabulary, damper and actuator terminology, and the procurement shorthand used by end users, EPCCs, skid fabricators and trading houses. Each entry is a plain-English definition written for specifiers and buyers, not a catalogue extract.

Valve types

Gate valve

A linear isolation valve whose wedge lifts clear of the bore, giving full flow and low pressure drop when open. Gate valves are for open-or-shut duty — throttling with one erodes the seat. The workhorse of pipelines and pump suctions. See gate valve vs ball valve for when each isolation style wins.

Globe valve

A linear valve whose disc closes against a seat set across an S-shaped flow path. The geometry costs pressure drop but gives fine control, so globe valves handle the throttling and regulating duty that would destroy a gate valve. Common on steam, condensate and utility lines where flow must be adjusted, not just stopped.

Ball valve

A quarter-turn valve sealing with a bored ball between two seats. A 90-degree turn goes from full flow to tight shutoff, which is why ball valves dominate isolation duty in small and mid sizes. Full-bore versions match the pipe diameter for piggable or low-loss lines; reduced-bore saves money where the extra pressure drop is harmless.

Butterfly valve

A quarter-turn valve whose disc rotates in the flow stream. Light, compact and economical per diameter, it is the default for large-bore water and HVAC duty, and it throttles acceptably. Wafer and lugged bodies clamp between flanges rather than bolting in as a separate spool — see wafer vs lugged for the difference that matters at maintenance time.

Check valve

A one-way valve that opens with forward flow and closes against reversal, protecting pumps and preventing back-contamination. Swing, dual-plate and axial (silent) designs close at different speeds — and closing speed decides whether you get water hammer. Strainer

A pipeline screen — usually a Y or basket pattern — that catches weld slag, scale and debris before it reaches pumps, control valves, steam traps and meters. Cheap insurance: many "failed valve" calls trace back to dirt a strainer would have caught. The mesh needs blowdown or cleaning on a schedule, not never.

Ratings & materials

PN rating

The European pressure designation — PN 16 nominally suits 16 bar at the reference temperature. Every rating derates as temperature climbs, so a PN 16 valve on hot service carries less than 16 bar. Match the PN to the flange rating of the line, not to the pump's best day.

ASME Class

The American rating ladder — Class 150, 300, 600 and up — defining pressure-temperature limits for flanges and valves. Class and PN do not convert exactly: Class 150 sits roughly at PN 20. On mixed-standard projects, pick one system, state it on the enquiry, and hold it — or the flanges arriving on site will not mate.

DN / NPS

Nominal size designations: DN in millimetres (European), NPS in inches (American). DN 50 corresponds to NPS 2. "Nominal" means neither is an exact bore measurement — it names a size family. Quote DN or inches consistently through a bill of materials so nothing gets guessed at the counter.

WCB

The commonest cast carbon steel for valve bodies (ASTM A216 grade WCB) — the default for general industrial, steam and hydrocarbon duty at moderate temperatures. Cheaper than stainless, tougher than iron. Below about −29°C, or on corrosive media, move to low-temperature or stainless grades — see valve body materials compared.

Wafer vs lugged

Two ways a butterfly or check valve sits between flanges. A wafer body clamps between them with through-bolts — cheapest, but you cannot break one side of the line open. A lugged body has threaded lugs, so downstream pipe can come off while the valve holds pressure — worth the premium wherever maintenance access matters.

Trim

The wetted working internals of a valve — seat, disc or plug, stem — as distinct from the body. Trim is the part you replace; the body is the part you keep. Specifying a harder or more corrosion-resistant trim often solves a service problem without paying for an exotic body material.

End connection

How a valve joins the line: flanged, threaded (BSPT or NPT), butt-weld or socket-weld, wafer, or press-fit. It decides installation labour and future removability, and it must be stated in every enquiry — the same valve is a different part number for each connection type.

EN 10204 3.1 certificate

A material test certificate confirming the actual heat and batch properties of the metal in your specific valve, validated by the manufacturer's inspection department independently of production. Oil and gas, petrochemical and many government specifications require 3.1 traceability — ask for it at enquiry stage, not after delivery.

Domain 03

Hydronic & PICV

PICV

Pressure independent control valve — a control valve, balancing valve and differential-pressure regulator in one body. It holds design flow at a terminal unit regardless of pressure swings elsewhere in the network, killing the endless rebalancing of conventional systems. Pettinaroli's EvoPICV and Dynasty 92 are the ranges Optimus carries; PICV explained covers how one works.

Balancing valve

A valve set during commissioning to proportion flow around a hydronic network so every branch receives its design share. Static balancing holds one setting; dynamic devices adjust with conditions. Bad balancing shows up as the far rooms never cooling — see hydronic balancing and PICV for commercial buildings.

Kv / Cv

Flow coefficients: the flow a valve passes at a reference pressure drop — Kv in m³/h at 1 bar, Cv in US gallons per minute at 1 psi (Cv is about 1.16 × Kv). The number that sizes a control valve: oversize it and it controls at the bottom of its travel; undersize it and it starves the circuit.

Differential pressure

The pressure difference across a valve, terminal or circuit — the quantity that actually drives flow. Hydronic control lives or dies by it: too much differential across a terminal makes valves noisy and control unstable, which is precisely the condition a PICV exists to regulate away.

Terminal unit

The equipment a hydronic loop finally serves — fan coil units, air handling units, chilled beams, radiators. Each terminal needs its design flow to deliver its design duty; the valves around it, whether separate control and balancing valves or a PICV doing both jobs, exist to guarantee exactly that flow.

Two-port vs three-port

The two shapes of terminal control. A two-port valve throttles flow and lets the system see variable volume — efficient with variable-speed pumps and the arrangement a PICV assumes. A three-port valve diverts flow so total volume stays constant — an older constant-volume pattern still met in retrofits.

Steam & condensate

Pressure reducing valve (PRV)

A self-acting valve that drops upstream pressure to a set, stable downstream value — no actuator, no power, just a spring and diaphragm reacting to sensed pressure. Essential where boilers make high-pressure steam but the process wants less. Yoshitake is the PRV line Optimus carries; sizing guidance is in how to size a PRV.

Steam trap

An automatic valve that discharges condensate and air from steam lines while holding back live steam. A trap failed open blows steam and money; failed closed, it floods the line and invites water hammer. Traps are selected per application — drip, tracing, process — never by pipe size alone.

Condensate

The hot water formed when steam gives up its latent heat. It must be drained continuously — that is the steam trap's job — and it is worth recovering, because condensate is treated, pre-heated boiler feed water. Condensate lying in a steam main is the raw material of water hammer.

Water hammer

The pressure shock produced when moving liquid is stopped suddenly — a slug of condensate hitting a fitting, or a valve slamming shut. It bursts gaskets, cracks bodies and injures people. Prevention is trap-and-drain discipline plus valves chosen to close at the right speed — see what causes water hammer.

Safety relief valve

A spring-loaded valve that lifts automatically at set pressure to protect equipment from overpressure, then reseats when pressure falls. It is protection of last resort, not a control device — if a relief valve is passing or lifting in normal operation, the system upstream is mis-set or the valve is mis-sized.

Flash steam

Steam formed when hot condensate drops to a lower pressure and part of it re-evaporates. It is not a leak and not a fault — but unrecovered flash steam is wasted energy, and undersized condensate lines full of it hammer and wear traps. Good trap selection and return design account for it.

Dampers & actuation

Damper

The gas-side counterpart of a valve: a device that isolates or modulates air and flue-gas flow in ducts. Butterfly dampers modulate, louver dampers give multi-blade control in large ducts, and guillotine dampers give full isolation for maintenance. Guillotine damper

A sliding-blade damper that pulls fully out of the gas path — unobstructed flow when open, positive isolation when shut; the duct-world equivalent of a knife gate valve. Used where crews must work safely downstream of it, often with seal-air systems for gas-tight service on flue and process ducts.

Actuator

The powered device that strokes a valve or damper: pneumatic (compressed air), electric (motor) or hydraulic. Selection hinges on the torque required, stroke speed, available power, duty cycle and the required fail-safe position. Fail-safe position

Where an actuated valve goes when power or signal is lost — fail-open, fail-closed or fail-last. Spring-return actuators drive to the safe position; double-acting ones hold the last one. The process hazard decides which is "safe": cooling water usually fails open, fuel fails closed. Specify it explicitly on every actuated valve.

Torque

The rotational force needed to seat, unseat and stroke a quarter-turn valve — highest at breakaway from the seated position. Actuators are sized against the valve's torque plus a safety factor: undersize one and the valve sticks exactly when it is dirty or the differential pressure is highest, which is exactly when it must move.

Isolation vs modulating duty

The two jobs an industrial damper does. Isolation dampers close a duct off for maintenance or safety and are judged on sealing; modulating dampers trim air or flue-gas flow continuously and are judged on control character and wear life. The duty decides blade type, seals and the actuator behind them.

Procurement

BOM (bill of materials)

The itemised list of everything a project or package needs — valve type, size, rating, materials, end connection and quantity, line by line. A clean BOM is the fastest route to a firm quotation: send yours over and each line comes back priced, with stock status against it.

Lead time

The time from confirmed order to goods ready — not from first enquiry. Ex-stock items skip the factory queue; factory-ordered items carry the maker's schedule plus freight. Distrust blanket promises: real lead time is quoted per item, per quantity, on the day. How to check stock availability and lead time explains what to ask.

Indent order

An order placed with the manufacturer specifically against your confirmed purchase — the standard route for non-stock items, special materials or large quantities. Indent pricing is often keener than ex-stock, traded against the factory lead time. Planned projects place indents early; emergencies buy from the rack.

Authorised distributor

A distributor formally appointed by the manufacturer for a market — genuine goods through a traceable channel, with the factory standing behind them. Principal

The manufacturer a distributor represents. "Principal" names the relationship from the distributor's side: the brands whose lines it carries and answers for locally. A distributor may be formally authorised for some principals and a stocking partner for others — and the honest ones tell you which is which.

EPCC

Engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning — the contractor model that delivers industrial plants as one package. EPCC buyers purchase valves in project waves against a specification, need documentation such as test certificates and material traceability as much as the product itself, and value lead-time certainty above unit price.

Skid fabricator

A workshop that builds process equipment as pre-piped, pre-wired modules — pump skids, dosing skids, PRV stations — delivered ready to install. Fabricators buy complete valve sets against a BOM and short deadlines, where one missing valve strands the whole skid; stock visibility matters more to them than to anyone.

RFQ

Request for quotation — the document (or WhatsApp message) that starts a supply conversation. A complete RFQ names the item, size, rating, material, end connection, quantity and required date; a complete one gets a same-visit answer, an incomplete one starts a round of questions first.
