Where each family belongs
Six families cover most first calls. Each one tells you what the pattern is for, which principal covers it, and where to read the full argument before you commit a spec.
Ball valves
A quarter-turn ball gives fast, tight shutoff, clear open–closed indication and easy actuation — the default isolation valve on most modern lines. KITZ is our core ball valve line, with Tiemme covering full-bore patterns for plumbing and heating. Not sure the duty wants a ball at all? Start with gate valve vs ball valve.
Gate valves
A rising wedge that isolates with minimal pressure drop, suited to infrequent, slow operation on long straight runs and higher temperatures — and unsuited to throttling. Covered in depth by the KITZ line; the full pattern comparison is in gate, globe or ball.
Globe valves
The pattern that throttles precisely — flow turns through the seat, which costs head but buys control. Where a line needs regulation rather than plain isolation, the globe earns its pressure drop. Terms like trim, seat and Cv are all in the glossary.
Strainers
The cheapest insurance on the line: a wye or basket strainer catches pipe debris before it reaches seats, cartridges and instruments. Pettinaroli's FilterBall 51F even builds the strainer into a ball valve for hydronic branches.
Pressure reducing valves
A PRV holds a steady downstream pressure whatever the upstream does — and sizing decides whether it works or hunts. Yoshitake covers steam and water service; the sizing steps are in how to size a PRV.
